The Georgian Basement Kitchen

Philip Charles Collection, Isle of Man

The Challenge

The house was Georgian, large, and full of the kind of quiet grandeur that makes you want to live up to it. The kitchen was in the basement, which sounds like a challenge, and it was. Low light, a complicated layout, and a room that had been patched and altered over the years rather than properly addressed. Mr and Mrs S wanted a complete transformation: back to bare walls, rebuilt from scratch, and finished to a standard that finally matched the house above. They also wanted someone to manage the whole thing for them. One point of contact. Total trust.

The Solution

We handled everything. Full rewire, full replumb, insulation, new flooring, decoration. And then we built a kitchen that made the most of what the space actually had going for it: original features, good proportions, and direct access to a beautiful garden.

Obsidian Green is a great colour for a room like this. Deep, grounded, and completely at home in a period property. Every door is hand-painted, every handle in brushed brass, a combination with enough warmth and character to transform the room into somewhere you actually want to spend time.

Thirty millimetre Silestone worktops with full-height splashbacks run the length of the kitchen, cool and clean against the richness of the green. Floating solid oak shelves with under-shelf LEDs, adjustable from warm to cool, add lightness and give the room a chance to breathe. A black resin sink with a black Quooker and Cube tap means there’s easy access to boiling, filtered, and sparkling water, without a kettle in sight.

There are Neff appliances throughout and a downdraft hood in the island surface that disappears when it’s not needed, because the view across the garden shouldn’t have to compete with a cooker hood.

Client Reaction

  • “Everything ran completely to schedule — we didn’t have to keep on top of anything, as Phil project managed the whole job and liaised with all the trades. Phil’s plan and vision has completely transformed the room into a bright and airy, welcoming space. The finish is excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We can’t recommend Philip Charles Kitchens highly enough.”
