The Penthouse Kitchen

The Challenge
When you’re refurbishing a penthouse apartment above Douglas Bay with high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling views, the kind of space that arrives with expectations already attached, the kitchen has to be able to hold its own. Mrs H needed something that felt genuinely grand, used every inch of the ceiling height, and still functioned as a real working kitchen. Storage was the pressing challenge. There was plenty of room to be spectacular. The trick was being practical at the same time.
The Solution
We designed around the height. Tall cabinetry runs the full wall, making the most of every centimetre the ceiling allows. Along the back wall, a glass dresser unit with open-top display boxes breaks up the run, somewhere for beautiful things to be seen, without closing the room in.
The island configuration is the feature that stops people in their tracks. Two islands, side by side, connected by a raised oak breakfast bar. Generous and considered in equal measure, it’s a layout that works for cooking, for eating, and for the kind of easy entertaining a space like this calls for. An integrated wine cooler sits at one end to complete the design.
20mm Quartz stone worktops were templated and cut with mitered joints, wrapping around corners and up the window sill in one continuous surface. Along the back wall, a run of slimline units doubles as a media wall: television, storage, and a clean line that holds the room together without dominating it.
